I especially like the last 5 items on this list. It’s important to ensure that everything is safe and ready to go for the season, but it is also important to take time to enjoy, knowing you are ready!
I know the weather is still warm and only the skiers are wishing for the snow to start flying.
However, it is not too early to think about your furnace. Colorado weather can change in an instant. The last thing you want is to wake up to a winter storm warning and have your furnace not work. Before winter arrives the best thing you can do for yourself and your family is to make sure your furnace will be ready when the forecast turns cold.
You want to make sure your furnace is operational, safe and energy-efficient. Even if your furnace was fully operational when you shut it down for the summer, a lot can happen to affect your furnace. Bugs, rodents, dust, pollen, cotton from the cottonwood trees and so much more can get into your system and block the air flow or damage the electronics or wiring.
Of course we recommend that you call Fesmire Heating & Air Conditioning to come out and do a routine inspection and start-up. We will clean your pressure switch ports, burners, flame sensor, check your wiring, change or clean your filter and cycle it to make sure everything is working properly. While we are there we can also check your Air Conditioning system and prepare it for winter shut down. In many cases your warranty requires routine maintenance checks on your system every 6 months. If not done it may void the warranty. So this is the perfect time to get everything ready for winter and then this spring get everything ready for summer.
If you want to put off calling in a professional the MOST IMPORTANT thing you need to do to ensure the proper operation and efficiency of your furnace is to change the filter. Even a filter that looks okay may have minute dust particles that may block air flow. Without proper air flow your system cannot work properly and may actually shut down. The 3 rules of real-estate are location, location, location; with that in mind, the 3 rules of furnace maintenance is filters, filters, filters! CHANGE YOUR FILTERS!
I hope that by now it is clear that your furnace filters should be changed regularly. Dirty filters require the furnace to work harder and that can cause undo wear on the motor and cost you real $$$$ due to being less efficient and using more energy. In addition to changing your filters, make sure that your furnace is clear of items that you may have stored around or on it. During the summer months it is easy to set things on top of your furnace or pile things around it. Now is the time to make sure that there are no flammable items around the furnace, or items blocking air flow and access to the furnace.
